Calgary is an AMAZING city with so many great options for adventure and activities for the family, (not even counting the Rockies!) If you live here, and have not yet visited the new Calgary Climbing Centre, you NEED to check it out! My son Lochlan and I visited at the end of March 2019 and brought along our GoPro.
The ClimbPark is a portion of the facility that has been set up for families and kids of all ages, as long as they are 40lbs and up. You don’t have to worry about gear, special shoes, or even any past climbing experience. There is plenty of staff in place to assist everyone with supplied harnesses, and to hook you in and out of the auto-belay system. Seriously, have fun, climb, and when you get to the top, jump down and let the harness slowly lower you down.
We spent an hour climbing and the price was per person. We thought we might need more time, but if you’re not an experienced climber an hour is a great workout, and the kids WILL be tired!

In this short tutorial for rock climbing beginners, I explain how to read, understand, and interpret rock climbing grades or ratings. I cover the meaning behind the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) for route climbing and the V-Scale or Hueco Scale for bouldering. Both of these rating systems are used in the US to describe the difficulty of routes and boulder problems in both indoor and outdoor climbing. I also go into the PG, PG13, R, and X ratings for outdoor climbs. I hope this video answers any questions new rock climbers may have about climbing grades they have seen in guidebooks, at the climbing gym, or at their outdoor crags and boulders.
